Policy, Elections & Communications

Layer_1

Policy

The Policy Unit supports informed decision-making by researching key issues, preparing briefings, and helping to produce clear, well-structured, accessible policy documents that guide council actions and priorities.

Roles include:
  • Undertaking research, providing briefings and summarising key issues. Helping to collate and format policy documents.
  • Any period is suitable.

Performance

The Corporate Performance Unit monitors how well services are delivered, tracks progress against strategic priorities, and ensures accountability. It helps assess outcomes, reports areas needing improvement, and supports data-driven decisions to enhance efficiency.

Roles include:

  • Providing clerical support to the Policy & Performance Officer and Policy & Scrutiny Officer Lead, checking data accuracy, formatting of reports and flagging issues.
  • Any period is suitable, with preference being around the 1st of the months of Aug, Nov, Feb, May.
Layer_3

Communications Team

The Communications Team helps to keep residents, businesses and wider stakeholders informed about the Council’s plans, projects, achievements and policy decisions.

We work across all council departments to ensure that our core services are promoted and accessible to all, new projects and initiatives are publicised, and good news stories are shared.

Roles of the team include:
  • Managing and monitoring our social media platforms, working with the press to respond to media enquiries and distribute news releases, managing and administering the Council’s website and working with councillors and officers to promote the activities of the authority.
  • The most relevant subjects for Work Experience in Communications could include Media Studies, English, Politics, or other subjects related to Humanities and Arts.

Community Engagement

This function builds meaningful connections with residents, amplifies their voices to help shape decisions and local services. It gathers feedback, and fosters collaboration between the council and the community to improve the area for all.

Roles include:

  • Under the supervision of the Policy & Performance Officer or Policy & Scrutiny Officer Lead, attending Bassetlaw Conversations / Youth Council Events. Helping to plan events, restocking engagement materials and housekeeping.
  • Any period is generally suitable if adequate notice is given.

Overview and Scrutiny

The Overview and Scrutiny function holds decision-makers to account by reviewing proposals, Key Decisions, and service performance. It provides constructive challenge, ensures transparency, and helps improve outcomes by making evidence-based recommendations that reflect community needs.

Roles of the team include:
  • Attending the Overview and Scrutiny Committee to learn about local democracy and executive/scrutiny arrangements.

Elections

The Team are responsible for organising all Parish, District, County, Parliamentary and Police Commissioner Elections as well as any Neighbourhood Planning Referendums in the District. An election across Bassetlaw involves the organisation of around 105 Polling Stations, over 300 staff and an electorate of over 90,000. The Electoral Registration function is also the responsibility of the Team ensuring that the Electoral Register is accurate and up to date. The canvass period where we contact every household runs from July – December when we publish the revised register.
Roles of the team include:
  • Providing clerical support to the team – processing registration and absent vote applications, accuracy checking.
  • Any period is generally suitable if adequate notice is given. Preference during the annual canvass period July – December. W/c 13th November we have two neighbourhood planning referendums that support could be provided for.

Members Support/Civic

This team provides Members with administrative support. They will also help signpost Members so that you can access information from other parts of the Council or other organisations. This team processes your expenses and mileage claims.

The team also provides administrative support for Electoral Services and Democratic Services. Within this team we have the Chairman’s Officer who organises the Council’s civic events.

Roles include:
  • Providing clerical support to the team.
  • Assisting with preparation for civic events.

Democratic Services

Democratic Services provides administrative support for the council’s decision-making processes and governance. The team organise and service council and committee meetings, prepares agendas and minutes, manages public access to information about these meetings, and offers advice and support to councillors, officers, and the public. This Team also produces the Council’s Diary (annual programme of meetings) and the Council’s Fact Book.
Roles of the team include:
  • Attending Committee meetings to learn about local democracy. Providing clerical support to the team.

Legal & Governance

The Legal Services department at a District Council plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive legal support and advice across all council functions.

The team handles a wide range of legal matters, including:
  • Property and planning law
  • Litigation (civil and criminal, including prosecutions)
  • Contract drafting
  • Advising on governance and constitutional issues
They ensure the council’s operations comply with all relevant legislation and statutory requirements, mitigating legal risks and protecting the public interest.
This role involves close collaboration with various council departments to facilitate the delivery of essential public services and projects, making a tangible impact on the local community.

  • Principal Lawyers and Management
  • Lawyers – Solicitors and Legal Executives
  • Conveyancing Executives
  • Paralegal Officers
  • Legal Administrators

Climate Change

Climate change department consists of:

  • Climate change manager x 2
  • Climate change officers
  • 1x Climate change admin

The climate change team at Bassetlaw work on a variety of projects that aim to reduce carbon emissions of the Council and district’s carbon footprints. These vary from decarbonisation our own commercial estate to energy management to external work with local businesses and residents. We are also heavily involved with the Council sustainability related policy and the green agenda.
There is a wide variety of school subjects that could be utilised for the team, the most directly
applicable will be STEM based.

Parks & Open Spaces

Parks and Open Spaces look after Parks, Nature Reserves, Allotments and we do work on Housing estates, there are a wide range of roles within the department such as fine sports who look after the golf course, bowling greens, cricket and football, tractor drivers who cut grass and hedges, triple drivers who cut grass, back up team who do a wide of jobs such as grass cutting, hedge cutting, litter picking weeding.

Parks staff who work on Parks and look after the flower beds, shrub beds, empty bins litter pick, look after the splash parks, plant bulbs.

We have a team who work in the cemetery they maintain the grounds and do the burials, we also have a team that look after the playgrounds and do inspections and any minor repair works to the paly areas.

Strategy & Engagement

The Strategy & Engagement Team is made up of four key areas:
  • Customer Experience which handles formal complaints, requests for services and compensation.
  • Policy & Service Development which provides the strategic housing function, identifying where affordable and social housing is needed, working with planning applications and neighbourhood consultations. Coordinating projects that improve neighbourhoods and using data to provide insight to improve services
  • Performance and Insight – This role ensures that Housing is meeting all of its statutory , compliance and performance measures and reports to Government . They also provide feed back on the performance of the Tenant Satisfaction Measures and benchmark performance against other Councils.

This includes:

  • Tenant & resident engagement facilitates the opportunities for tenants and residents to be heard , involved and influence service improvements . They also enable tenants to hold the Council to account and monitor performance and carry out scrutiny.
